Counselling Appointments

It’s important not to let problems build up. If you decide to see a counsellor contact us straight away to make an appointment.

This page explains how to arrange to see one of USW’s counsellors in a private, face-to-face appointment, on any of our four main campuses (Cardiff, Glyntaff, Newport, Treforest). Appointments are usually available from 9am-4pm Monday to Thursday and 9am-3pm on Friday.

When making an appointment you will be asked your name, student number, the campus where you want the appointment, your availability (days / times) and if you have a preference for a particular counsellor.
Please do not disclose details of your issues during the appointment booking process.

Online Counselling is also available, where you use email or private Skype chat to talk to a counsellor instead of meeting them in person.

First Appointment

Your first counselling appointment can be booked online via Advice Zone Online. You will need to be logged in to UniLife to use the booking system.

You can also book a first appointment through the Advice Zone by calling 01443 482540 or going to the Advice Zone on your campus and asking to make an appointment to see a Counsellor.

Ongoing Appointments

During your first appointment your Counsellor may talk to you about the possibility of further sessions. These sessions will be booked there and then with your Counsellor. Ongoing appointments cannot be booked online.

One-Off Appointments

One-Off appointments may be available on your campus. These appointments are single sessions only and can be booked in the same way as a first appointment (see above). You will need to be logged in to UniLife to use the booking system.

Cancelling and re-booking appointments

You can cancel an appointment using the appointments link above. You can also cancel an appointment by calling the Advice Zone on 01443 482 540 or in person at an Advice Zone (locations).

PLEASE NOTE: if you cancel your appointment you MUST email the Counselling Service quoting your student ID, within 24 hours of the cancellation time to confirm attendance at your following appointment. Without confirmation you will lose your space and need to reengage with the Counselling Service by booking a new first appointment.

Finding Us

Cardiff – The Counselling Service is located at Cardiff Advice Zone.

Glyntaff – The Counselling Service is located on the Ground Floor of the Elaine Morgan Building.

Newport – The Counselling Service at City Campus is located in the Advice Zone.

Treforest – The Counselling Service at Treforest is located on main campus on the Ground Floor of the Hirwaun Building and is part of the Wellbeing Service.


An online diary system is used to manage appointments (including those arranged over the phone or in person). Data you provide is kept on an independent server that is only accessed by Student Services and Learning Services staff and used for administrative purposes.

All the Counsellors within the Counselling Service abide by a strict confidentiality code. We take your confidentiality very seriously.
